Land based Farming
We Farm on Land so Shrimps Can’t Escape
One of the strengths of aquaculture has been the use of genetic selection to breed shrimps that grow faster and are more resistant against diseases. However, if these genetically-superior farmed shrimps were to escape, they can pose a threat to wild native species and tip the ecological balance of coastal marine habitats. Simply think of what happened to the Asian Tiger Shrimp: the first occurrence of the Asian Tiger Shrimp in the U.S. was in November 1988. Close to 300 shrimp were captured off the South Eastern shore, after an accidental release from an aquaculture facility. This species can now be caught in waters from Texas, all the way to North Carolina. Farming on land is more expensive, but as you can see, it’s also avoiding disasters like this. Hence, we are more sustainable.

Recycled Ponds
We Revive Old, Abandoned
and Disused Shrimp Ponds
Many shrimp farmers think only of one thing, and that is—yes, you got that right—money. In Asia, land is relatively cheap and to make a shrimp pond doesn’t cost the world. This results in farmers buying cheap land (mostly mangroves), turn them into shrimp ponds and use them for 5 to a maximum of 10 years to harvest, and by then the soil would be contaminated beyond repair—meaning it would not be usable anymore. There’s even a name for this: “slash and sink”. This method of shrimp farming has destroyed thousands of hectares of land all over Asia, creating bleak coastal landscapes you have probably seen on reports on the ugly side of shrimp farming.

No Pollution
No Waste Ends Up in Nature
Although one cent is not a lot of money, but 100 x one cent starts to get people’s attention, let alone one million or even one billion cents—that’s ten thousand dollars ($10,000) and one million dollars ($1,000,000) by the way. The same goes for shrimp waste. Every year, thousands of tonnes of accumulated waste (from faeces, uneaten food, etc.) discharged from shrimp farms end up in the ocean, polluting it and causing degradation of aquatic habitats and eutrophication of lakes or coastal zones. If we continue to ignore them, all these environmental destruction from shrimp farming will have repercussions that eventually impact us, human beings, because we are right at the end of the food chain. To make sure we do not participate in this crime against nature—and ultimately, crime against humans—we at The Sustainable Shrimp™ use state-of-the-art waste water treatment system to ensure that the eventual captured waste from our ponds will be dried and used either as fertiliser or burned as fuel to create energy after every shrimp run. Hence, we are more sustainable.

Bacteria are Killed
At The Sustainable Shrimp™, our shrimps swim around in clear, well-ventilated water, and more importantly, not on top of each other. This is because we at The Sustainable Shrimp™ have a different philosophy on farming shrimps. Happy shrimps are healthy shrimps. If our shrimp ponds are filled with thoroughly-filtered, oxygenated water, and we maintain low stock densities, giving shrimps lots of space to swim around freely, not only are they less susceptible to bacterial infection, but they would have greater immunity against viral infections. The benefits are obvious: reduction in the risk of disease outbreaks common in shrimp farming.
This is the reason that we are one of the few shrimp farms that we insist on state-of-the-art filtration systems for our ponds, such as UV, sand and ozone filters, just to name a few. It’s because of this and our strict hygiene protocol that we DON’T USE ANY ANTIBIOTICS at all. This is much healthier for our shrimps, and eventually, us who eat shrimps. Hence, we are more sustainable.

No plastic packaging
We only use biodegradable Packing materials
We at The Sustainable Shrimp™ are against using any plastic at all. To transport our products alive, fresh and frozen all over the world, we need to pack and transport them according to the standards of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Many companies go for the cheap option and use PLASTICS. We can’t comment on how others run their businesses, but it is against every fibre of our being to perpetuate the already sorry state of plastic pollution on earth, and so we looked for more ECO-FRIENDLY solutions. With the advances in technology these days, we have managed to find many biodegradable packing materials to keep our products clean and fresh when they arrive at your doorstep. Hence, we are more sustainable.
